The Lagoon Nebula by Richard Bloch

Photo of the Week for November 7, 2014

The Lagoon Nebula by Richard BlochAs the chill of late autumn settles in, summer may seem like a distant memory. Richard Bloch‘s fine image of the Lagoon Nebula (M8) and its neighbour to the north, the Trifid Nebula (M20), provides a welcome reminder of warm evenings spent viewing (and imaging) the Sagittarius Milky Way.

Richard captured this photo last July near Kingston, Ontario. He used a modified Canon EOS Rebel T3i DSLR camera mounted to a Sky-Watcher 80mm f/7.5 refractor telescope to acquire 22, 10-minute exposures at ISO 1600. The individual frames were combined into this single image with PixInsight software.
