Surprise Southern Comet by Malcolm Park

Photo of the Week for July 24, 2015

Surprise Southern Comet by Malcolm Park Canadian astrophotographer Malcolm Park of Prince Edward County, Ontario, was at the Atacama Lodge, San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, in mid-July when the most recent Comet PanSTARRS unexpectedly brightened to magnitude 5. (The comet is known officially as C/2014 Q1.) Unfortunately, the comet is on its way south and out of reach for Canadian observers.

Park’s photo is a 3-second exposure at ISO 5000 captured on July 18 with a Nikon D800 DSLR camera mounted to a 80mm Explore Scientific ED refractor telescope on a Sky-Watcher EQ6 Pro mount.
